The Ohio budget is a moral document that sets the direction for Ohio for the next two years. Ohioans need this budget to set us on a pathway toward economic security for all Ohioans. Proposals such as a new state child tax credit for households with kids 6 and under could go a long way in achieving more economic stability for these families. However, the status quo in other areas will not be enough. As a person of faith, I have seen people show so much love to their communities through service and donations, but we cannot end hunger alone. I encourage the Ohio General Assembly to
- Support the Governor’s proposed child tax credit
- Fully fund the Ohio Association of food banks.
- Expand School Meals
- Fully fund the fair school funding plan (FSFP) to make sure our schools are adequately preparing young people for the future.
These simple and pragmatic steps will strengthen Ohio communities, focus services, and help families gain economic stability.

As a person of faith, I believe we are called to guarantee that all receive their daily bread. Our local faith community volunteers regularly through donations, service trips, and meal preparation for neighbors in need. But we cannot do it alone and need the state of Ohio to do its part too. Through the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, we can maximize our impact through their efficiency and effectiveness to secure fresh fruits and vegetables from Ohio farmers, strengthen our local economy, and guarantee that our neighbors are fed. Sadly, Governor DeWine reduced funding for the Ohio Association of Foodbanks in his most recent budget proposal as need is rising across Ohio. The Ohio General Assembly should fund the foodbanks at the level needed, which is $50 million for the upcoming year. This will be leveraged by local charities to multiply the impact through volunteers and additional donations to create a world where all are fed. We encourage the Ohio General Assembly to amend the Governor’s proposed budget to include full funding for the Ohio Association of Foodbanks.

Children cannot learn on an empty stomach. As a person of faith, I believe that if a child goes hungry in our community society has come up short. It is especially difficult when a child experiences hunger during the school day. They will struggle to focus and may even lead to the disruption of other students. During the pandemic, most school districts were able to offer school meals to their students without inquiring about family income. School districts regularly offer material assistance and educational supports such as desks, books, and computers to all students regardless of income level because these services are necessary for education. Similarly, food is a necessity to learn. If you have ever skipped breakfast and tried to work, you know it will be extremely difficult for a student to learn. Expanding school meals is cost effective, reduces bureaucracy and paperwork, ends lunchroom stigma and shaming, ends school lunch debt, and of course – reduces childhood hunger in our communities.
